This circular, slightly concave clear piece of glass is used for evaporating small volumes of liquid or for covering a beaker to help retain heat and prevent quick evaporation of the liquid in the beaker (not gas tight when used for this application). When used for evaporation, the student can observe the precipitate or crystals that form.
